How to use your Recovery routine.

A 57-second video and a few notes that make the difference between Recovery skincare that works and Recovery skincare that just sits on your skin. Whether you're here for eczema, chronic dry skin, or just a better moisturizer — this is the playbook our regulars wish they'd had on day one.

Two products, two methods

The Recovery Cleanser and the Recovery Protocol work together but are applied differently. Here's exactly how to use each one.

Using the Recovery Cleanser

  1. Apply to damp skin — or use it in the shower. Either works. Damp skin is what activates the lather and lets the charcoal do its job.
  2. Massage in for at least 60 seconds. This is the part most people skip. The activated charcoal needs that full minute to bind to oil, daily buildup, and pollutants. Skipping it is the difference between a clean face and a deep-clean face.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Make sure no residue is left, especially around the hairline and jawline.
  4. Follow immediately with the Recovery Protocol on still-damp skin (see below). The cleanser is the prep; the moisturizer is the recovery.

Using the Recovery Protocol (moisturizer)

  1. Dip your finger into the jar up to the first knuckle. That's the right amount for your face. More isn't better — it'll just sit on top.
  2. Spread it evenly across your face (or wherever you're applying it). For body use on dry patches, elbows, or eczema-prone areas, use more.
  3. Apply to damp skin. Right after cleansing or showering, before your skin fully dries. Water gets sealed into your barrier — that's where the recovery happens.
  4. Use it morning and night. Twice-daily is where the magic compounds. The customers who skip the morning application are the ones who say it's working "okay." The twice-a-day customers are the ones who become regulars.

Consistency matters more than amount. The customers who get the best results are the ones who use both products twice a day for at least three weeks before judging the routine. Give the protocol time to do what it's designed to do.

What to expect, week by week

Skin responds differently depending on what brought you here. The two most common journeys:

If you're using it for eczema, chronic dry skin, or a barrier issue

Week 1The post-shower itch and tightness ease, usually within the first few days. Your skin starts feeling fed instead of thirsty. The cleanser may briefly feel like "more" than your old routine — that's the 60-second massage working.
Weeks 2–3This is when most of our chronic-skin customers tell us they notice the real shift. Redness calms. Flaking subsides. Dry patches start to retreat. The Recovery Protocol is rebuilding your skin barrier, and barrier repair takes time — this is the window to trust the process and stay consistent.
Week 4 and beyondStable skin. Many of our customers with eczema describe this as the point they stop bracing for the next flare. Continued consistent use becomes preventative, not reactive.

If you're using it as a daily moisturizer or for sensitive skin

Days 1–3Skin feels soft, well-fed, comfortable. That feeling of having just applied a really good cream — except it lasts through the day.
Weeks 1–2Texture starts smoothing. The mid-day dryness disappears. Pores look quieter from the gentle daily cleanse. You'll likely find yourself reaching for other products less often.
Week 4 and beyondA lot of our customers tell us they've replaced 3–4 products in their routine with just our two. Less is more, and your skin will tell you it agrees.

Quick FAQ

Why does the cleanser need 60 seconds?

The activated charcoal in the Recovery Cleanser works by binding to oil, daily buildup, and impurities — but it needs contact time to actually do that. 30 seconds isn't enough. 60 seconds is the threshold where the charcoal is fully working. Most cleansers are off your face in 10 seconds; ours rewards you for slowing down.

How should I store my jar?

Tallow melts at body temperature, so keep your jar somewhere cool — a bedroom drawer, a closet, or the fridge if you live somewhere warm. Avoid steamy bathrooms, hot cars, and direct sunlight. Properly stored, it'll keep for 12+ months. Stored badly (think: shower shelf, sunny windowsill), it can start to smell off in a few weeks — that smell is your warning to swap jars. If yours ever smells off, email us at info@lumetallow.com and we'll replace it.

Will it clog my pores?

Tallow is non-comedogenic for most people because its lipid profile matches your skin's own sebum. That said, every skin is different — if you're acne-prone, start with night-only application of the Recovery Protocol for the first week and see how your skin responds. Most acne-prone customers tell us they were pleasantly surprised.

Can I use the Recovery Protocol under makeup?

Yes. Use the first-knuckle amount on damp skin in the morning, wait 3–5 minutes for it to fully absorb, then apply makeup as normal. If you go heavier, your foundation may not sit as well — less is more under makeup.

Will it smell like beef?

No. Properly rendered grass-fed tallow has almost no scent — a faint, neutral, slightly nutty note at most. We don't add fragrance because the sensitive-skin and eczema customers we built this for can't tolerate it. If your jar ever smells off, contact us — we'll replace it.

How long does a jar of the Recovery Protocol last?

For face-only use, most people get 6–8 weeks per jar. If you're using it on hands, body, or for full eczema-flare coverage, plan on 4–5 weeks. Subscribe & Save handles the reorder timing for you and saves 15%.

Can I use the Recovery Protocol on my face AND my body?

Yes — same product, same application. For body use (especially eczema patches, elbows, knees, hands), use more than the first-knuckle amount and don't worry about washing it off. Sleep in it if you can.

What if my skin doesn't agree with it?

It's rare, but it happens — especially if you're allergic to beef or have a very specific reactive condition. If you have any reaction beyond initial purging or adjustment, stop using it and email us at info@lumetallow.com. We stand behind every jar.

Should I order the products separately or get the Bundle?

The Recovery Bundle is $64 vs $83.95 if you buy them separately — that's about a 24% savings, and they're designed to work together. If you're committing to the full routine, the Bundle is the smart move. If you only need one, start with whichever fits your skin priority: the Cleanser for clarity and daily prep, the Protocol for barrier repair and deep moisture.
